Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensors, coolant sensors also known as "water temperature sensors" are installed in the water jacket or coolant pipe of the engine block, as well as on the cylinder head or radiator to determine the engine coolant temperature.

And detect the temperature of the coolant, the internal water temperature sensor uses a negative temperature coefficient thermistor, the higher the temperature of the engine coolant the greater the resistance, the lower the temperature of the engine coolant the smaller the resistance, and provides the engine cooling water temperature signal to the electronic control unit.

The sensor is basically a thermistor that changes resistance with temperature. Resistance is low when ECT is high (hot) and high when ECT is low (cold).

This resistance reading is sent to the vehicle's on-board computer, which is used to adjust various ignition, fuel and emission control functions, and to turn the radiator cooling fan on and off as needed.
